Dendy Bar

The Bar Downstairs from the Dendy Cinema - one of the few alternative venues left in town - has always been a reasonably priced place for some food, drink and pool shooting. Now it's going a bit clubby with Paper Scissors Rock spinning some breakbeat and house on Saturday night after 10.30pm. Wednesday night is Syncopation night with funky jazz from Mike Dotch and the Scientist, while Thursdays sees the salsa crowd move in and dance to old favourites.

Lellabella

This wool shop is for those who prefer to dabble with the organised tanglings of purl and cross-stitch rather than the microscopic intricacies of traditional lace and linen. A resplendent woolly wall should draw you inside confronting the ardent knitter with an array of different colours, textures and weights. Multi-colour mixes, wool with feathers, sparkles and frills, often with stylish examples in the window displays to encourage you in the fashioning of your own Prada-style pullover.

Ghirardellis

Ghirardellis spills out into Sandton Square offering a relaxed al fresco eating experience ideal for Johannesburg's balmy summer weather. The extensive Italian menu caters for a variety of tastes and portions are generous, tasty and reasonably priced. Chicken breasts are excellent, as are the enormous steaks. Both are served with a variety of tasty sauces - try the wicked chilli or garlic. For a truly decadent dessert, there's nothing to beat the chocolate mousse cake. No need to book if you're eating out early, but later diners will probably find the place packed on weekends.

Sleazy Listening

Among the peripheral events related to the current 'Living and Working in Vienna' exhibition at the Kunsthalle, the Sleazy Listening sessions at the chic'n'shabby Schikaneder Kino lounge are enthusiastically recommended. Every Saturday night they feature DJs and electronic soundsmiths accompanying shorts made by young Austrian filmmakers. The pre-Christmas programme included well-known DJs Patrick Pulsinger and Erdem Tunakan, celebrated laptop artiste and guitarist Christian Fennesz and the Austrian John Peel, Fritz Ostermayer.
